"Filled with Wand-ers"

Designing a Magic store for my original character, Silva. He is an elf that takes pride in his craft to make wands and staffs.

Exterior colour schemes for Silva's store.
Moodboard, wanted to explore more of his personal workspace and interest in carpentry, especially in making wands and staffs. Silva is a very independant elf, so I wanted to reflect that the store that he has made was built from scratch.

Here are the ideations for the exterior of the house. For Fig.2 and Fig.3, you can see that there are some burnt part of the wood, indicating that customers do test out their wands outside the store. I wanted to give this overgrown-bush feel to show that Silva does not really have that time to clear out the bushes since he is often occupied making wands in his hut. Pieces of logs could be seen scatted on the floor- he leaves them outside so that his workplace isn't too cramp. Used Fig.3 as the final design.

3 Variations of the interior Design, and I thought about how Silva would make a workshop in the same space as his store, and wanted to explore with how he would  set up the area based on the size he was given. Settled with Fig 4 for the design as I felt like it reflected how he likes to present himself towards the customers as a neat, put-together store owner compared to his organised mess of his workshop. In Fig 3, there is a small trapdoor that leads to the mines where Silva harvests the gemstones.

"Rose"

"Babirusa"

Character Design of Rusa, a sly witch which steals from her village. Based and inspired by the Javanese Mythology of "Babi Ngepet", a Boar Demon theif.

Rusa's "Masked" turnaround, where villagers don't recognise her because of the spell she cast on herself. her final cape design shows a lot of sharp and angular
This is Rusa's moodboard, This was based on the "Babi Ngepet", which is a practice of black magic where a person shapeshifts into a black boar to steal items from people's place. With this, I wanted to create a Witch who steals from the Forest Village and lives in the outskirts of the village near the woods, so no one could get to her. This takes place in a fictional, reimagined ancient Indonesia, specifically in  Javanese mythology. After she steals the items for the village, she often goes to other villages in the region to resell these items to as the main source of her income. Of course if she stumbles upon something she likes, she would keep it for herself.  The name "Rusa" was a shortened form of "Babirusa", which is a boar native to Indonesia. I wanted to create an unseeming character with a twinge of slyness in her civilian form.

Expression Sheet

Poses are mainly based of traditional Javanese dances.

The way she casts spells has to be in sets of Javanese dances..

She stole this seat that she's currently sitting on from the Village Cheif.

Hands were designed with the intent to look like claws. Since most of her face is covered when she is in ":Witch Mode", hands is her main form of "expression"

Turnarounds

Civilian Wear

Wanted her colour scheme to have a purple tint to show show a hint of "Black magic". The batik print of the skirt is of "Parang", which is often used by royalty. It isn't hers, she definitely stole from the Monarchs, but no one bats an eye.  Rusa's hair is greying because she uses black magic frequently. Wanted to incorporate sharper features through the Kebaya and her hair, to imply her edge and her slyness. For her batik "kain" skirt, her pattern of her skirt follows along when the character moves, like in the cartoon "Chowder".

Early concepts

Thought process of exploring body types to see what suites her character and personality the most. ended up using a body shape in between #2 and #1. Added a little more chub to her final design.
Early concepts of hairstyles. Wanted to try a balance where Rusa's hair can be angular yet neat and put together. At this time, I was debating if her hair should be unkept, to reflect her "scrappy" lifestyle, or the idea of am old Javanese wife.  I decided her hair needed to capture the essence of a traditional Javanese hairstyle, while holding an interesting silhouette where her hair would look like horns. The shape varied between Javanese hairstyles and regular, messy buns in these explorations. Some of these  hairstyles were also "Babirusa" inspired, with the little pieces of sideburns popping out. Rejected these designs as it would not look like horns. her final hairstyle felt like the most unique out of the different variations.
Costuming sketches, where the earlier variations of her "Witch form" had a boar's mask, inspired by Javanese theatre masks called "Topeng". Decided that her design looked too crowded on her face and decided to simplify the silhouette with the triangular hood, where the "mask" is a part of the hood. The design of the Hood was loosely inspired by Topengs, where the slanted and angular eyes captured her nature as a witch. You can see some  chunky necklaces on design 3, 4 and 5, and this is because Babi Ngepets are often depicted with a gold necklace. Decided to abandon the idea because it made her appearance too crowded and loud. The gold was placed into the accents of the Hood markings.  For the cape, I went with a hybrid design of 3 and 4, where it captures some of her civilian clothes.

In her civilian from, I was exploring different traditional Indonesian clothing types and what would match together with her cape. Decided to stick with Design B as it gives her body more visual structure, especially when wearing her huge cape. Was experimenting with her colour scheme snd the purple-brown colour scheme stuck. Felt like it reflected her sinister nature.
